Tapescript 1 - Verbatim description of initiation ceremonies on the Fortescue River, at Roebourne & Croydon Station with Coppin Dale (Roebourne) as informant, from tape made in 1964; site on Fortescue River about 1 mile upstream from junction with Portland River; shown on part of Series R302, map SF 50-7, reproduced in text; Fortescue River rite - ritual snatching of boy, two or three men as guardians, return to camp (seclusion, music), no teaching of songs or myths; Croydon rite snatching, ornaments of candidate, journey inviting participants from other districts, separation from women at end of dancing, operation at dawn; Tapescript 2 - Made January 1968, describes Piddarra & Wollijinga rites; Piddarra rite - arm tying, reception of candidate on return (lines of food rations, dancers with leaves), distribution of food; Wollijinga rite - snatching, return to camp for formal farewells, journey with guardians, collection of rations, Mamia clown man, further farewells, dance with shields, fire stick symbol of operators, ritual mourning, examination of stone, human table, gifts for operators, return to camp, beating initiation party with bundles of bark; use of spinifex seeds & gum leaves & yams before white mans food became available; return to camp accompanied by Wolawolong song & beating with boards; Tapescript 3 - Description of site at Croydon Station; recorded in 1964 with Coppin and Teddy Dale as informants; map shows details of site; explanation of marks on phallic stone representing circumcision & subincision; lines of stones mark paths of Kurama, Ngaluma & Indijibandi people to phallic stone; initiators from another area chosen; last performance when informant was a boy c.19101915; yellowish rock used for blades with saw edges, obtained from Millstream Station (in Indjibandi territory); initiant remained at site until wound healed, with guardian; comparison of Roebourne & Fortescue River practice; film sequences & notes on film of public part of Port Hedland initiation ceremony, made 13-14th January, 1968; dancers (ochre body designs, belts, head & armbands, leaves); initiants & guardians, man who takes role of M.C. & Mamia man sprinkling onlookers with flour, ceremonial farewells (candidate sitting in laps of relatives) distribution of provisions; second days film - ritual mourning of women, activity of Mamia man, candidates farewells, dancers wearing La Grange area body designs, distribution of provisions; Appendix 1 - Remarks on a circumcision ground near Croydon H.S., extract from C-G. von Brandenstein.
